Barbara Atkins, fashion director of Holt Renfrew Canada, says the "it" bag craze began when Hermes designed the Kelly bag for Grace Kelly, which became famous in 1956 when the princess appeared in Life magazine with it on her arm. The Kelly was followed by the Birkin bag, named after actress Jane Birkin.
Today a coveted Birkin can command hundreds of thousands of dollars (following several years on a waiting list).
"Today's customers go online constantly to follow celebrity style--they're checking out what comes down the runway before it even gets a mention in the magazines," says Atkins. "They clamor to get on waiting lists, scarcity breeds excitement and the new 'it' bag is born."
